How I choose the wood

Most of my burls come from California. I handpick my wood, often buying the burl whole. At that stage, I can see its shape and get clues about the figure inside, but I won’t really know what I have until I cut into it.

I position each burl on my sawmill to get the shape I’m looking for. I’m especially drawn to irregular, asymmetrical pieces—the unusual edges and shapes give each one its character.

There’s discovery in the process. With Buckeye, I don’t see the full color until the wood has been seasoned, kiln-dried, and I start shaping it. Choosing the burl is just the beginning.

I create wall sculptures up to 10 feet in diameter.
